Gentle Travel Yoga You Can Do in Airports & Airplanes for Relaxation and Reducing Anxiety
I did my yoga training in India and have backpacked and volunteered in over 40 countries and have family currently living on another continent so needless to say, I’ve spent a lot of time on planes and in airports.
I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities and experiences that air travel allows but it can be so stressful. You have to buy your ticket, pack all your stuff, get to the airport on time, get through security, squish yourself into small seats surrounded by strangers and then hope that your flight and your luggage all arrive on time. Multiply that stress and anxiety if you’re traveling with a group or family or small children.
It’s so important to move your body before, during and after long flights. In fact, yoga asanas (the physical poses we know today) were created to prepare the body for long sessions of seated meditation so these breathing techniques and yoga postures will help calm your mind, help you relax, reduce stress and anxiety and give your joints and muscles some much-needed movement.
This 15 minute yoga flow includes some breathing techniques to calm the mind and relax the body followed by gentle asana-inspired movements that you can do in an airport or airplane seat. Or on a train. Or on a bus. Or in a car (as long as you’re not driving of course). Really you can do it in any chair anywhere. #yogaeverywhere
I also have to give a shoutout to International Yoga Day as well as the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year, and the official first day of Summer. Summer is the most popular time to travel and take those extended vacations. However, Americans today are taking less vacation time than at any point in nearly 40 years, according to a report for the U.S. Travel Association by Oxford Economics. It’s important to take some time for self-care, rest, renewal and to explore new places.
Within the US, California, Texas and Florida are the top 3 travel destinations. North Carolina is in the Top 10 no doubt since we have it all from charming beaches on the East coast to metropolitan cities in the middle to the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains in the West and everything in between!
If you include Asheville, NC in your summer travel plans you can enjoy a unique yoga hike that combines yoga, hiking and meditation with beautiful mountains and waterfalls in Western North Carolina. We welcome beginners, individuals, couples and groups for both public and private yoga hikes! It’s a wonderful way to celebrate a birthday, reunion, honeymoon, anniversary, bachelorette party or other milestone. Here is more info on all the awesome things to do in this city:
