What is the Spring Equinox?
The Spring Equinox happens on or around March 20. At this time, day and night will be nearly equal (12 hours each) everywhere around the world. Here in the northern hemisphere, it is the first day of Spring and in the southern hemisphere, it is the first day of Autumn. In fact, the word “equinox” is derived from Latin meaning “equal night.”
45 Minute Spring Equinox Yoga Flow & Intention Setting
This 45 minute beginner-intermediate yoga flow includes lots of sun salutations (surya namaskar) and moon salutations (chandra namaskar) to connect with the Spring Equinox and Spring Season of new beginnings.
✍️ I also encourage journaling before and after this practice about some intentions you have for this year.
These can be things you want to improve or change or things you want to release.
Keep coming back to these intentions during your yoga and/or journaling practice and note the progress you’ve made during the Fall Equinox in September.
The Spring Equinox (mid March) is the turning point when daylight begins to win out over darkness and is considered to be the first day of Spring.
Spring Yoga Guided Relaxation Nidra
Yoga nidra translates to yoga sleep or dynamic sleep. However, the goal is not to fall asleep. Yoga nidra can actually be more of an awakening. This practice may or may not lead to personal insights, a reduction in stress and anxiety, improvement in sleep and provide deep relaxation.
We'll do a gentle anti-rheumatic series of movements that are good for the joints before laying down for guided visualization and body scanning. We recommend you to practice on a yoga mat on the floor (not on a soft bed or couch) to keep from completely falling asleep.
If you really resonated with this practice, you can find more Yoga Nidra information and videos in this post.
Spring & The Water Element
The element most associated with Spring is Water.
Water represents fluidity, passion, creativity, emotions and sexuality. We’ll work on strengthening, opening and relaxing the hips in this practice, as well as lubricating the joints.
Water is also associated with the second chakra: Svadhishthana or the Sacral Chakra. It is located in abdomen (sacral/pelvic area) and affects our ability to connect with and accept others and new experiences.
The sense most associated with the Water element is taste.
Water element yoga poses focus on releasing emotional energy and/or trauma, especially from the hip and pelvic area.
Find more yoga poses + yoga videos for happy hips & joints in this Water Element blog post.
You ARE the Water Element!
Your body is between 50% and 75% water.
Spend time in and around natural bodies of water: oceans, lakes, rivers, creeks, and waterfalls to connect more with the water element in Nature.
Spring Water Element Health Challenge
If you’d like a water challenge to practice off the mat, try exclusively drinking water for 30 days. Eat as you normally do but just cut out the tea, coffee, juice, soda, etc and drink only water and see how you feel. This will seriously help hydrate and detox your body. Not to mention, you’ll save some money too!
I have done this 30 day water challenge before and I always feel healthier, happier and more naturally energized afterwards.
Spring Yoga Retreat
Attending a Spring yoga retreat is the most ideal way to start the season. Our New Beginnings Spring Equinox Yoga Retreat for March 18-20, 2022 is SOLD OUT but we plan to make this an annual tradition so you can join us in 2023 (or during other retreats in June, July or November this year).
However, you can create your own retreat by joining us for a Spring yoga hike and/or incorporating some Water element rituals into this season of self care.
